The classical Chinese book “Journey to the West” (Chinese language: 西游记, pinyin: Xī yóujì) is a pseudo-historical account of a monk, Xuanzang, who sets off on a pilgrimage to India to seek out Buddhist scriptures to bring back to China. The Chinese book can be read on many levels and the tale is at once an adventure story, a journey of spiritual insight, an allegory and a satire.
“Journey to the West” is considered one of four great classical Chinese books （chinese characters: 中国古典小说，pinyin：Zhōngguó gǔdiǎn xiǎoshuō ） written during the Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644). It was written by the Chinese author Wu Cheng´en (Chinese characters: 吴承恩，pinyin: Wúchéng’ēn) and published in the 1590´s. The story is a fictionalized account of a legendary pilgrimage by a Buddhist Monk, Xuanzang (Chinese characters: 玄奘，pinyin：Xuán zàng）, to India to retrieve sacred texts. The fable is inspired by historic texts and traditional folk tales of the Chinese literature.
The Chinese book “Journey to the West” consists of 100 chapters chronicling the adventures of the monk and his three disciples, Monkey, Pig and Friar Sand. The disciples were assigned as the monks’ protectors by Bodhisattva Guan Yin, on instructions from the Buddha, in order to atone for past sins.
The first seven chapters of this Chinese book recount the tale of the Monkey King （Chinese characters: 美猴王，pinyin：Měi hóu wáng）, an extraordinary but rebellious being. Chapter’s eight to twelve tell the story of Xuanzang and reveals his motives for seeking out the Buddhist scriptures and his preparation for the journey. The third section details the adventures and difficulties the monk and his disciples face as they travel over large areas conquering huge mountains, rushing rivers and evil demons. The following chapters tell of when they finally reach the West and bring the scriptures back to China.

Winter is cold and moist, especially in January, but can still be very pleasant when the sun is out. It snows occasionally. Winter is the low season so Guilin is lecrowded and it is cheaper to travel.
